First 5 Madera County, in partnership with United Way of Fresno and Madera Counties, proudly brings Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to children aged 0-5 across Madera County. This nationally recognized early literacy program promotes a love of reading and strengthens family bonding by providing children with monthly books delivered directly to their homes at no cost to families through the United States Postal Service (USPS).
Children from birth to age 5 can enroll to receive one free book every month. Together, we are building a stronger community throughout Madera County, one book at a time.
Families can choose books in English or a bilingual Spanish and English format, making it easier for parents and caregivers to read together and build a strong foundation for learning.
The Imagination Library is a renowned program that has gifted over 224 million books to children worldwide. Thanks to the passage of Senate Bill 1183 and the support of Senator Grove, we can expand this incredible program across California, including here in Fresno County.
How can I support the Imagination Library?
You can enroll your child using the “register online” button above, by visiting https://imaginationlibrary.com/check-availability/ or visiting the First 5 Madera Family Resource Center.
Yes! When you enroll your child, you will have the option to choose bilingual books in English and Spanish. Currently, there are no other languages available.
Book orders are placed on the first day of the month AFTER your completed registration form is entered into the database and approved. Once the order is placed, your child’s first book should arrive within 10-12 weeks. For example: If we receive your registration on June 15, you’ll be included in the July 1 book order. Your book will arrive by late August. After that, the books will arrive more routinely every month, unless your address changes or your child ages out of the program.
You don’t have to create an account for your child to receive books, but you can manage your child’s participation in the program online. You’ll be able to make address updates and see when books were mailed, as well as which titles.
Books may arrive at different times of the month. After each child has received the first book, subsequent books should arrive by the last day of the month—but not necessarily on the same day.
No. You and your child’s information will never be shared with advertisers. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library takes information security very seriously. We will not share it or use it for any purpose other than to communicate with you about the Imagination Library.
When your child reaches their 5th birthday, they will graduate from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Woohoo! They will receive the graduation book, the final one in the program, the month of their 5th birthday as long as they are active in the system with a valid address on file.
In addition to receiving the Graduation Book, children will receive a personalized video message from Dolly on their 5th birthday via the registered email!
Please Note: Any child whose 5th birthday is in the same month that their registration becomes active will not receive the graduation email and will only receive the first book, The Little Engine That Could.
If you have moved to a new address, please email us with the following information:
The child’s name
The child’s ID number (as listed in your parent portal) or birthdate
The new address you wish to receive the books at going forward.
If your new address does not fall within an Imagination Library service area, you will unfortunately no longer qualify for the program and will be placed on a mailing list to be notified when a program becomes available in your area. If your new address does fall within a service area, our team will work to change the mailing address in the system for that child. Please note, since these changes are processed alongside the monthly book order, this may cause an interruption or delay in your books mailing schedule. Don’t worry, you can expect your books to arrive at your new address within 2-3 months of the change request. Going forward you are also able to change the mailing address for your child in your parent portal.
In the meantime, we encourage you to set up an address change with USPS to make sure any books/mail sent before the address is changed are then redirected to your new address. If you need additional instructions or assistance let us know!
